In counter flow open-circuit cooling towers, the input warm water is spread by the spraying nozzles on the evaporative surface and fresh outside air enters the unit from the opposite side through the air louvers and passes through the evaporative surface. In the evaporative area the heat exchange happens between air and water, the superficial layers of the water absorb the latent heat of evaporation from the lower layers while evaporating and consequently cool down the warm water. The evaporation increases the humidity of passing air to saturated state.
